Honors Junior English: Fall Semester Exam Review Sheet

You may make ONE handwritten notecard on one side of a 4 X 6 card to use on the test.


Part I: Vocabulary (50 multiple choice questions)   Choose the best word to complete each sentence (25).  Choose the word that matches the definition (25). 40 words are on the review list so some will be used twice. 50 points

Part II: Literature, Literary Terms, and Writing (75 multiple choice questions) These questions will cover basic information about each major work we’ve read this semester including: Zeitoun, Raisin in the Sun, Maus,  The Great Gatsby, and The Crucible.  75 points

Part III: Quotation identification and short answer (10 Short, 2 sentence responses)      You will read several quotes from the major texts we’ve read this semester and identify the text of origin.  This will demonstrate your understanding of writing styles and the differences in technique. 30 points

Part IV: Written Response (3 questions @ 15 points each)  One question each from Raisin in the Sun, Zeitoun, and The Great Gatsby .  One paragraph per response.  45 points.

  1. anemia       (n.)       Lack of blood; a condition of unhealthy paleness and feebleness, resulting either from diminution of the amount of blood in the body, or from a diminished proportion of red corpuscles in the blood. 
  2. astronaut   (n.)       somebody trained to travel and perform tasks in space. 
  3. astronomy (n.)         the science that deals with the material universe beyond the earth's atmosphere.
  4. atrophy      (n.)       the shrinking in size of some part or organ of the body, usually caused by injury, disease, or lack of use
  5. autocracy   (n.)         a government in which somebody holds unlimited power; a country governed by a single ruler who has unlimited power.
  6. bibliomaniac          (n.)       an extreme fondness for books, especially the collecting of them
  7. bicycle       (n. & v.)           A vehicle having two wheels held one behind the other in a frame, typically propelled by a seated rider using pedals, and steered by means of handlebars at the front. Also: this as a form of transport.
  8. cacophony (n.)       an unpleasant combination of loud, often jarring, sounds; the use of harsh unpleasant sounds in language, e.g. for literary effect
  9. cephalopod            (n.)         An animal of the class Cephalopoda (The most highly organized class of Mollusca, characterized by a distinct head with ‘arms’ or tentacles attached to it; comprising Cuttle-fishes, the Nautilus, etc., and numerous fossil species.)
  10. clinometer             (n.) an instrument used in surveying or geology to measure the angle of a slope or incline
  11. dactylology           (n.)       ‘Finger-speech’; the art of ‘speaking’ or communicating ideas by signs made with the fingers, as in the sign language alphabet.
  12. demagogue            (n.) a political leader who gains power by appealing to people's emotions, instincts, and prejudices in a way that is considered manipulative and dangerous
  13. diaphanous            (adj.)    A. delicate or gauzy, so as to be transparent. B. fragile or insubstantial because extremely faint or slight 
  14. diarchy      (n.)       A government by two rulers. Also spec. the system of provincial government in India established by the Government of India Act of 1919
  15. euphonious            (adj.)    having a pleasant sound
  16. gynarchy   (n.)       Government by a woman or women.
  17. heliocentric            (adj. & n.)        Referred to the sun as center; considered as viewed from the center of the sun
  18. heliotherapy          (n.)       the treatment of disease by exposure to the sun's rays.
  19. heliotropism          (n.)       growth toward sunlight by a plant.
  20. hematology           (n.)       That branch of animal physiology which relates to the blood.
  21. hemicycle              (n.)       A half circle, semicircle; a semicircular structure, as an orchestra or apse-like recess.
  22. hemorrhage           (n.)        An escape of blood from the blood vessels; a flux of blood, either external or internal, due to rupture of a vessel; bleeding, esp. when profuse or dangerous.
  23. heterogeneous       (adj.)    Of one body in respect of another, or of various bodies in respect of each other: diverse in kind or nature, of completely different characters; incongruous; foreign.
  24. hieroglyphic          (n.)       a figure or symbol with a hidden meaning. 
  25. homogeneous        (adj.)    Of one thing in respect of another, or of various things in respect of each other: Of the same kind, nature, or character; alike, similar, congruous.
  26. iconoclast  (n.)       A. a person who attacks cherished beliefs, traditional institutions, etc., as being based on error or superstition. B. a breaker or destroyer of images, especially those set up for religious veneration.
  27. ideogram   (n.)       a symbol used in some writing systems, e.g. those of Japan and China, that directly but abstractly represents a thing or concept itself rather than the word for it; a symbol or graphic character used to represent a word, e.g. "@" or "&".
  28. misanthrope           (n.)       somebody who hates humanity, or who dislikes and distrusts other people and tends to avoid them
  29. misoneism (n.)       hatred or dislike of what is new or represents change.
  30. monochrome         (n.)       A painting executed in different shades of one colour, with representation of light and shade. A photograph or print in shades of one color; a black and white photograph or print.
  31. oligarchy   (n.)       Government by a small group of people; a form of government in which the exercise of power is restricted to a few people or families (in later use, freq. a wealthy elite); an instance of this form of government. Also: the members of such a government collectively. Also in extended use.
  32. osteotomy (n.)       Surg. Surgical division, or partial resection, of a bone, esp. in order to correct a deformity; an instance of this. 
  33. pachyderm            (n.)       any mammal of the former order Pachydermata (see Pachydermata n.). In later (non-technical) use: any of a group of these, being typically large, thick-skinned, sparsely haired herbivores such as elephants, rhinoceroses, and hippopotamuses.
  34. perimeter   (n.)       A. A continuous line forming the boundary of a closed geometrical figure or of any area or surface; a circumference; a periphery, outline. Also: the length of this. B. Mil. A defended boundary of a military position.
  35. petrology   (n.)       the scientific study of rocks, including petrography and petrogenesis.
  36. philanthropy          (n.)       a desire to improve the material, social, and spiritual welfare of humanity, especially through charitable activities; general love for, or benevolence toward, the whole of humankind
  37. plutocrat    (n.)       a member of a wealthy social class that controls or greatly influences the government of a society
  38. polyglot     (n.)       A person who speaks, writes, or understands a number of languages.
  39. polygon     (n.)       A plane figure with many (usually more than four) straight sides and the same number of angles.
  40. Thalassic    (adj.)    living in or growing in the sea; relating to a sea or ocean, especially a smaller inland sea
