The Canterbury Tales

A story about stories!
Today we started to learn about The Canterbury Tales.  Make sure you have the following things in your notes:
  • It was written by Geoffrey Chaucer in MIDDLE ENGLISH
  • The prologue is written almost entirely in heroic couplets. The HEROIC COUPLET is two lines of rhymed poetry with 5 stressed syllables per line.  Chaucer invented it and is considered the "Father of English Poetry" because of it.
  • The pilgrims were on their way to Canterbury Cathedral to see where Thomas a Becket was martyred.
  • They are telling stories to make the trip more fun.  The person who tells the best story will be the guest of honor at a feast when they return from their trip.
