CCRS

Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on Grade 9 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively. [SL.9-10.1]

SFO

Students will engage in discussion with classmates to activate their interest in Othello.

Agenda

  1. Attendance
  2. King Arthur Test
  3. Othello Discussion Groups:
    1. Two men are talking.  One, whom we will call the lover, has a girlfriend.  The other, whom we will call the friend, tries to plant seeds of doubt in the lover about the girlfriend’s loyalty.
    2. Two men are talking.  This time the friend tries to convince the lover that the lover’s girlfriend has eyes for another particular man.
    3. A confrontation between the lover and his girlfriend.  Believing her unfaithful, he is angry but won’t say why.  She is innocent and bewildered by his anger.
    4. Discuss the reasons people are jealous, and if a male might believe another male rather than his girlfriend.
    5. How does someone innocent of infidelity prove it?
    6. How will the girlfriend react when falsely accused?

Homework

  1. Write about the topics presented in the improvisation activity and how they would be complicated by these 3 complications: 1. The lover is a minority and the girlfriend is white.  2. There is a significant difference in social background (religion, origin, family money) between the couple.  3. How would it change things if the meddling friend was from the same background as the girlfriend or if he was the same background as the lover?  Write a response to each of these.
  2. Study for the Unit 5 Vocabulary Pretest
